GOD BLESS AMERICA
A lot has been in the news lately about the Merchant Ships being attack by pirates from Somolia.  This brings back a lot of memories for a lot of the guys that manned the ships during WW II.

The Merchant Seaman faced the same dangers of war as the regular armed forces but they did so as non-military citizens, or civilians.  Their mechant ships were peacetime vessels which even if fitted with guns for defense, were not designed to withstand an enemy attack.  The job of the Merchant Navy was to carry vital troops, food, fuel and equipment to wherever they were needed in the fight against the Axis alliance of Germany, Italy, and Japan.  Although the Allied Merchant Navy participated in all the theatres of war, it is now generally accepted by historians, that their most crucial struggle was "The Battle of the Atlantic". The battle began on September 3rd, 1939, when the British passenger liner Athenia was torpedoed by a German U-boat, and it continued until Germany surrendered on May 7th, 1945.

Our Merchant Fleet is now under attack again, this time by pirates.  The ship was the SS  Maersk Alabama, owned by Maersk Line, Ltd.  The ship was a Merchant vessel carrying supplies to a much needed country.  She came under attack by pirates, not German U-boats like was in WW II, when the US Merchant Ships were being sank or damaged, what did the US Government do?  They put Sailors called Armed Guards on board the Merchant Ships. The big question is , if our ships are under attack now, is there any difference between then and now.  Ships need to be protected again.   These pirates are acting like the German's  U-boats acted in WWII.  Only one difference is that the ships and crews are being held for ramson.

Our Merchant Fleet hasn't lost a ship due to pirates since the 1700's.  The pirates almost got one of our ships the other day, but our Seaman prevented the taking of our ship.  They did not even has any guns, maybe all the Merchant Ships transiting in the Indian Ocean should fly the American Flag.

The Sailors of WW II that served as Armed Guards, did not even get any recognition for their service in WW II.  They manned the guns that were used in WW I, many of them lost their lives along with the Seaman manning the Merchant Ships.

Seaweed has the history and many photos that served in WW II, transporting military supplies to the war front in Europe and Asia, also during the War the troops were transported on ships to every theater of war.  Just ask Seaweed for the history of your Dad's , Granddad's ship that he was transported on during WWII and Korea.
